A regional 4-course menu awaits you for lunch in the Ristorante Al Bosco at the Riffelalp Resort – Swiss cuisine with fresh ingredients and exquisite wines set amidst the stunning mountain landscape. Your multilingual guide is an expert on the region and an entertaining storyteller, who will accompany you through the day with fascinating anecdotes.

«THE MATTERHORN STORY»

After ten years, ‘THE MATTERHORN STORY’ is returning to Europe's highest open-air theatre in summer 2025. To commemorate the first ascent of the Matterhorn on 14 July 1865, the open-air theatre on the Riffelberg will reopen again after its original première in 2015. The play by author and co-director Livia Anne Richard focuses on pioneering spirit and the origins of tourism in Zermatt.

The true story of the first ascent will be a moving experience. Look forward to a unique theatre event set against an impressive mountain backdrop.

Performances: 28 June to 23 August 2025 (no performances on 5/6 July 2025)

• Evening performances from Thursday to Saturday, 7.30 pm

Please note that these are special evening trains. All theatre-goers must therefore purchase a train ticket and season tickets are not valid.

Until when can I book the package?

Bookings can be made up to two days prior to the event date.

Will I receive the ticket by post or electronically?

Tickets will be sent to you electronically at the beginning of April.

Can I choose my own seat?

The seating area offers an excellent view from every seat. Therefore, there are no seating categories. After booking, the organiser will assign the best available seats.

In which language are the performances held?

The performances are designed to be understood by both German and English speakers. Visitors who do not understand either German or English are not advised to attend.

Can I book a ticket for the event without accommodation?

The «THE MATTERHORN STORY» package is offered exclusively as a complete package by Zermatt Tourism. If you wish to purchase only an event ticket, you can do so directly on the website www.freilichtspielezermatt.ch.

What are the cancellation terms?

Cancellations or rebookings of the package can only be guaranteed in exceptional cases and upon request. When booking products of Freilichtspiele Zermatt, the terms and conditions of Freilichtspiele Zermatt also apply. This applies especially to cancellations/exchanges/sale of concert tickets and/or other products. When booking a package deal, the general terms and conditions of Zermatt Tourism apply, along with the additional terms and conditions of Freilichtspiele Zermatt and terms and conditions of Gornergrat Railway. In case of any contradictions, the general terms and conditions of Zermatt Tourism take precedence.

What happens if the event is cancelled due to bad weather?

Please refer to Article 5 of the T&Cs of Freilichtspiele Zermatt.

Can children attend the event?

Yes, children aged 10 and above are warmly welcomed. However, there are no discounts for children; they are charged the regular price.

I am staying in Zermatt for four days. Can I still book a ticket?

Yes, you can book up to seven nights, provided your stay includes the event date.

How can I book hotel upgrades or additional services?

Any upgrades or additional services, such as massages, must be arranged directly with the accommodation.

Is my personal rail ticket (e.g., season ticket, GA, Half-Fare Card) valid for the journey to Riffelberg?

The evening performances involve special train rides, and a special ticket is mandatory for all theatre visitors. Season tickets and other reduced tickets cannot be applied.
