Winter hiking & snowshoeing

If you want to get to know the winter hiking area in the Zermatt – Matterhorn destination, there are a wide range of options available. There are 70 kilometres of marked winter hiking trails in the area around Zermatt. A few tips to bear in mind:

1. Only walk on the marked winter hiking trails (purple signposts) in winter.
2. Check the trail status before you set off.
3. If there is an avalanche risk, find out whether the path is open (information at the cable car station, signposts).
4. The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so take a warm jumper and a winter jacket with you.
5. Wear good winter shoes and take enough provisions with you.
6. Do not go alone. Tell someone where you are going and report back when you arrive at your destination.
7. Keep an eye on the weather and turn back in good time if the weather turns bad.
8. Never go onto a glacier without a mountain guide or leave the marked winter hiking trails.
9. Please show consideration for plants and animals.
10. Never take short-cuts through forests and meadows; stick to existing roads and paths.
11. Show consideration for skiers, other hikers and pedestrians.
12. ‘Be searchable’ = equip yourself with an additional reflector* from Recco in summer and winter. Available at the Zermatt Tourism counter.
    *This additional reflector does not replace an avalanche transceiver!
