Description

On 13 July 1865, a hastily assembled rope team sets off from the village of Zermatt to conquer the «Hore» for the very first time. With this daring endeavour, the seven men – consisting of wealthy British alpinists and local mountain guides – wanted to beat the Italians, who were also attempting to conquer the mountain of mountains from the Italian side of the Matterhorn. This dramatic competition and its consequences were to make Zermatt famous in one fell swoop and go down in world history.

Ten years after its world premiere, Livia Anne Richard's successful historical play «THE MATTERHORN STORY» is returning to Europe's highest open-air stage this summer. Exactly 160 years after the first ascent of the Matterhorn, audiences can look forward to a new production of this Swiss story that gets under the skin and has universal appeal. The play will once again be performed on the Riffelberg – at 2,582 metres above sea level – in front of a gigantic and absolutely unique natural backdrop: The Matterhorn.

In her work, Bernese author and director Livia Anne Richard sheds light on the hitherto little-known aspects of these dramatic events: She shows the real heroes who were not in the limelight at the time, but – on the contrary – were vilified. The play, which is based on fact, already thrilled audiences in summer 2015 – on the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn – and generated huge international media coverage.
