Every summer, from around the end of June to mid-September, approximately 125 Valais Blacknose sheep graze on the Gornergrat and prefer to stay in shady areas.
Up close and personal with the black-nosed sheep in Zermatt. It is an image that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The picture of Valais Blacknose sheep, who make their home high above Zermatt with a view of the Matterhorn. These sheep, with their black noses, roam the Gornergrat region every summer between June and September, bringing joy to many locals and tourists on their hikes. Their spiral-shaped horns, black patches, and particularly their soft wool make them unique. Around 125 Blacknose sheep graze on the Gornergrat and prefer to stay in shady spots, as their fluffy wool makes it too hot for them in the sun. But no matter where they are on the mountain, once the Blacknose sheep enter the Gornergrat region, you have the chance to visit them in the wild. You can locate the woolly sheep using GPS.
