The Dom was named after the canon Berchtold, who conducted the first altitude measurements of the two summits Dom and Täschhorn.
On the route, you cross heavily crevassed glaciers up to the Festijoch. Once there, a small descent follows to the Hohberggletscher. Now the route bends widely below the glacier slopes. Since you climb parallel to the crevasses, special caution is required. Below the summit, there is a large cornice that cannot be recognized as such from the summit. It must absolutely be avoided.
Requirements for this ascent are excellent fitness, experience with crampons, and good acclimatization. The ascent from the Domhütte takes 6 - 7 hours. Once at the top, the breathtaking panorama is worth the effort, and some feel as if they can overlook the whole world. The descent back to the Domhütte also takes about 4 hours. But beware: the way down to the valley is still a long one.
