3 Places to Stay in the Mountains Around Zermatt

When the sun disappears behind the peaks and the Matterhorn glows in the evening light, a very special atmosphere settles over the mountains. Spending the night up here lets you experience this magical moment first-hand – whether high in the Alps, surrounded by exceptional cuisine, or beside a peaceful mountain lake. These three mountain stays showcase just how varied and unforgettable an overnight stay in Zermatt's alpine world can be.

Gandegg Hut: Between Rock, Ice and Stars

From the Trockener Steg station, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the Gandegg Hut at 3,030 metres above sea level. With every step, the landscape becomes more rugged, the air fresher and the views of the surrounding glaciers more impressive.

This traditional mountain hut offers dormitory accommodation as well as simple shared rooms. For something a little more special, subject to availability, guests can book the Glacier Room, featuring a panoramic window overlooking the Monte Rosa massif.

After dinner together at the hut, it is worth stepping outside one last time. A clear, star-filled sky stretches above the peaks, while the lights in the valley are already glowing far below. The following morning, the rising sun bathes the surrounding 4,000-metre peaks in colour – a view well worth getting up early for.

Riffelalp Resort: A Night in the Mountains with a Touch of Luxury

The journey to Riffelalp is an experience in itself. The Gornergrat Railway winds its way through forests and across open mountain slopes to an altitude of 2,222 metres. In summer, the historic Riffelalp Tram takes guests from the station to the resort.

Almost all rooms and suites offer impressive views of the Matterhorn from their balconies. Hiking trails begin right outside the door, while inside, restaurants and a spacious spa invite guests to relax and unwind. One particular highlight is the heated outdoor pool, with its magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.

In the evening, fine cuisine and Alpine scenery come together to create a memorable experience. And early the next morning, before the first day visitors arrive, the trails around the resort are still peaceful and almost untouched.

Mountain Lodge Grünsee: An Evening by the Lake

Surrounded by larch and Swiss stone pine trees, Mountain Lodge Grünsee is located directly on the popular Five Lakes Walk. Between the trees, glimpses of the Matterhorn appear again and again.

Over dinner or a glass of Valais wine, guests can watch the sun slowly disappear behind the peaks, bathing the landscape in warm evening light.

Later, it is well worth taking a walk to nearby Lake Grünsee. The water lies peacefully among the trees and, with a little luck, reflects the silhouette of the Matterhorn. The lodge offers five guest rooms as well as dormitory accommodation.

The next morning, the Five Lakes Walk, numerous other hiking routes and a variety of bike trails lead directly from the lodge into Zermatt's natural surroundings.

Which Mountain Stay Is Right for Me?

The Gandegg Hut offers an authentic experience surrounded by dramatic high-Alpine scenery. Riffelalp Resort combines the tranquillity of the mountains with wellness and fine dining. At Mountain Lodge Grünsee, the cosy terrace, nearby lake and surrounding nature define the experience.

Whichever you choose, spending a night in the mountains allows you to experience a different side of Zermatt – long after most visitors have returned to the valley.
