A signboard shows the way to the start of the via ferrata at Turuwang. Time required from the train station to the start: just under 30 minutes. The Zermatt via ferrata features the classics that require skill, no fear of heights, and surefootedness. After the first stage, a picnic can be enjoyed perfectly. Right next to it is the Beresina hut.
Beresina hut
It recalls the time of the Napoleonic wars. Valais was occupied by Napoleon in 1799. Communities were to commit to recruiting one young man each for war service in Russia. Since no one was found in Zermatt, an inducement had to be made. Those who performed military service were to receive the stable with lush pasture at Turuwang after the campaign in Russia. Eventually, a young man was found. Since around 1000 Swiss died in the Battle of the Beresina, the Zermatt man did not return either.
