The tree line at Riffelalp shows it clearly: This is where the winter forest begins. The gnarled Swiss stone pines are heavily laden with snow. The cold winter breeze rustles through the bare branches of the larches. The snow crunches underfoot. And so the path winds gently down to Zermatt.
Those who do this winter hike in the late afternoon may see a deer, which hardly differs in color from the larch trunks and stands completely still.
