Renovation of the Schönbiel Hut – important information

The Schönbiel Hut will be renovated in summer 2026. The Matterhorn Trek will take place as planned from June 26, 2026 to July 31, 2026.

During your stay, there may be noise emissions during the day, limited availability of certain areas, and adjustments in hut operations. Overnight stays and meals are guaranteed, but comfort may be reduced.

The Matterhorn Trek

The perfect hut trekking experience in the mountain paradise around Zermatt, surrounded by the highest peaks and largest glaciers of the Alps. The package is bookable from June 26, 2026 to July 31, 2026.

Over five days, you will hike through the Zermatt mountain world in stages of four to six hours, moving from hut to hut. After each hike, the hut team warmly invites you to a welcome aperitif. The program for this self-guided trek is as follows:

Day 1: Zermatt – Trift Mountain Inn

The charming and historic Trift Mountain Inn is run by the great-granddaughter of the founder together with their spouse, a mountain guide in the fifth generation, and with help from their children.

Route Description:

Ascent from Zermatt (1,620 m) to Trift Mountain Inn.
Elevation gain: +745 m
Distance: 4.1 km

Day 2: Trift Mountain Inn – Schönbiel Hut

"Dr Scheen Biel," the old name for the sunny terrace at the end of the Mutt Valley, is where the Schönbiel Hut stands, a starting point for breathtaking snow and climbing tours, easily accessible via impressive hikes.

Route Description:

Ascent to the viewpoints Höhbalmen and Hohliecht (2,675 m), then over the lateral moraine of the Zmutt Glacier to Schönbiel Hut (2,694 m).
Elevation gain: +780 m, -430 m
Distance: 11.3 km

Day 3: Schönbiel Hut – Hörnli Hut Matterhorn

Under the north face of the Matterhorn to the Hörnli Hut Matterhorn (3,260 m). From here, climbers set out via the Hörnli Ridge to the summit of the Matterhorn. Early risers can watch the parade of headlamps from the alpinists.

Route Description:

Elevation gain: +1,105 m, -540 m
Distance: 13.2 km

Day 4: Hörnli Hut Matterhorn – Gandegg Hut

Rustic and clad in Swiss stone pine wood, Gandegg Hut offers more than 135 years of history and a unique view of the Breithorn and Theodul Glacier.

Route Description:

Along the foot of the Matterhorn, over the Matterhorn Glacier Trail and under the east face of the Matterhorn to Gandegg Hut (3,030 m). Impressive views of the Gorner Glacier, Monte Rosa, and Breithorn.
Elevation gain: +430 m, -660 m
Distance: 9 km

Day 5: Gandegg Hut – Zermatt

Descent to Zermatt (1,620 m).

Route Description:

Elevation loss: -1,415 m
Distance: 8.9 km

Optional:

If you want to go even higher at the end of the Matterhorn Trek, you can climb the Breithorn at 4,164 meters above sea level on the last day with a mountain guide from ZERMATTERS.

Meeting point: After the overnight stay in Gandegg Hut at 08:00 on Trockener Steg (the exact meeting point depends on weather conditions and cable car opening times. ZERMATTERS will contact you one day before the planned tour to discuss all details).
Cost: CHF 240 / person
Included: Mountain guide and equipment (crampons, climbing harness, and ski pole)
Not included: Tickets Trockener Steg – Klein Matterhorn and Klein Matterhorn – Zermatt

What impact does the renovation of the Schönbiel Hut in summer 2026 have on the Matterhorn Trek?

The Schönbiel Hut will be renovated in summer 2026. The Matterhorn Trek will take place as planned from June 26, 2026 to July 31, 2026. During your stay, there may be noise emissions during the day, limited availability of certain areas, and adjustments in hut operations. Overnight stays and meals are guaranteed, but comfort may be reduced.

What experience is required to undertake this trek?

We recommend having experience in alpine hiking on demanding, partly rocky and scree-covered terrain, as well as sufficient endurance for daily stages of four to six hours in highalpine environments at around 3,000 metres. Surefootedness and a good head for heights are essential.

Do the huts offer packed lunches for the day?

Packed lunches are available from all huts on request and at an extra charge.

Can I also book trek for children?

The Matterhorn Trek can only be booked for adults via zermatt.swiss. Accommodation for children must be booked directly through the huts. It must be clarified with the huts in advance whether sufficient places are available. The exact discounts for children are determined by the huts.

Trift Mountain Inn: Children receive a discount depending on their age:

9–16 years: CHF 10 reduction
0–8 years: CHF 15 reduction

Schönbiel Hut: Children receive a reduction.

Hörnli Hut Matterhorn: Children up to the age of 16 pay half the adult price.

Gandegg Hut: Young people up to the age of 12 receive a reduction of CHF 20.

What are the cancellation terms?

The cancellation terms outlined in the Zermatt Tourism GTCs apply. To avoid any possible cancellation fees, we strongly recommend that you take out private travel insurance. To find the right cover, please contact your insurance provider.

Cancellation or rebooking of overnight stays in the hut is only possible in accordance with our General Terms and Conditions of Contract and Travel (AVRB). The provider's General Terms and Conditions of Contract and Travel apply only on a subsidiary basis if and insofar as they do not conflict with our General Terms and Conditions of Contract and Travel and if a point is not regulated in our General Terms and Conditions of Contract and Travel.

What happens if there is bad / stormy weather?

If the trek cannot be undertaken due to weather conditions, guests are requested to arrange this through their travel cancellation insurance. The cancellation terms outlined in the Zermatt Tourism GTCs apply.

Are visitor's taxes already included in the price?

Yes, visitor's tax is already included in the price of the package.

Can I take my dog on the hike? Are dogs allowed in the huts?

The regulations of the individual huts apply:

Berggasthaus Trift: Dogs are allowed in double rooms only.
Schönbiel Hut: Dogs are allowed in the hut but not in the bedrooms.
Hörnli Hut Matterhorn: Dogs are only allowed in double rooms. Please check availability with the hut directly in advance.
Gandegg Hut: Because the premises in the hut are very small, dogs are only allowed in certain designated rooms in the Gandegg Hut. Availability must be requested directly from the hut. On site, a surcharge for the more expensive room category must be paid.

Do I need to bring my own hut or silk sleeping bag?

Hut or silk sleeping bags are obligatory in all huts and are for your own protection / hygiene. Sleeping bags can be purchased in the Gandegg Hut and in the Hörnli Hut Matterhorn.

Please note that the first overnight stay is in the Berggasthaus Trift, where sleeping bags are also compulsory, but sleeping bags cannot be purchased.

Are overnight stays in a dorm or double room?

Overnight stays are generally in shared rooms. At Berggasthaus Trift and Hörnli Hut Matterhorn there is the option of staying in a double room.

Berggasthaus Trift: Overnight accommodation in a double room can be requested by e-mail, and the CHF 12 supplement can be paid directly on site.

Hörnli Hut Matterhorn: The overnight stay in a double room can be requested by e-mail and booked for an additional charge.

Can I use a credit card for payment in the huts?

In the Schönbielhütte, the Hörnli Hut Matterhorn and the Gandegg Hut, payment by credit card is possible. Only cash payment is accepted at the Berggasthaus Trift.

What equipment is needed for the Breithorn ascent, which can be booked in addition, and where can I get it?

Crampons, climbing harness and ski poles are required for the Breithorn ascent. The equipment is included in the price of CHF 240 / person and is brought by the mountain guide to the planned meeting point. Additional equipment such as rope and carabiners will be organized by the mountain guide.

Additional information

The Matterhorn Trek requires careful preparation, as it is a long, multi-day tour in alpine surroundings.
Cancellation of overnight stays in huts can only be guaranteed in exceptional cases.
Any additional services must be booked directly with the huts.
