Renovation of the Schönbiel Hut – important information
The Schönbiel Hut will be renovated in summer 2026. The Matterhorn Trek will take place as planned from June 26, 2026 to July 31, 2026.
During your stay, there may be noise emissions during the day, limited availability of certain areas, and adjustments in hut operations. Overnight stays and meals are guaranteed, but comfort may be reduced.
The Matterhorn Trek
The perfect hut trekking experience in the mountain paradise around Zermatt, surrounded by the highest peaks and largest glaciers of the Alps. The package is bookable from June 26, 2026 to July 31, 2026.
Over five days, you will hike through the Zermatt mountain world in stages of four to six hours, moving from hut to hut. After each hike, the hut team warmly invites you to a welcome aperitif. The program for this self-guided trek is as follows:
Day 1: Zermatt – Trift Mountain Inn
The charming and historic Trift Mountain Inn is run by the great-granddaughter of the founder together with their spouse, a mountain guide in the fifth generation, and with help from their children.
Route Description:
Day 2: Trift Mountain Inn – Schönbiel Hut
"Dr Scheen Biel," the old name for the sunny terrace at the end of the Mutt Valley, is where the Schönbiel Hut stands, a starting point for breathtaking snow and climbing tours, easily accessible via impressive hikes.

Day 3: Schönbiel Hut – Hörnli Hut Matterhorn
Under the north face of the Matterhorn to the Hörnli Hut Matterhorn (3,260 m). From here, climbers set out via the Hörnli Ridge to the summit of the Matterhorn. Early risers can watch the parade of headlamps from the alpinists.

Day 4: Hörnli Hut Matterhorn – Gandegg Hut
Rustic and clad in Swiss stone pine wood, Gandegg Hut offers more than 135 years of history and a unique view of the Breithorn and Theodul Glacier.

Day 5: Gandegg Hut – Zermatt
Descent to Zermatt (1,620 m).

If you want to go even higher at the end of the Matterhorn Trek, you can climb the Breithorn at 4,164 meters above sea level on the last day with a mountain guide from ZERMATTERS.
