Description

If you are in Zermatt, you should take this path at least once. Here the first climbers started on July 14, 1865, to conquer the Matterhorn. Of the seven mountaineers, only three returned to the village of Zermatt, including the Briton Edward Whymper.

At the Hörnlihütte you can feel, touch, experience the Matterhorn. It towers mightily over the hut. From here the climbing route leads over the Hörnligrat to the summit. From the hut terrace, climbers can be watched (binoculars required) who start climbing very early in the morning with headlamps. Are they climbing smoothly and fluidly? Have they already reached the Solvay Hut (4,003 m)? Have they made it to the shoulder? How fast are they climbing on the roof?

  • Past the idyllic Schwarzsee with chapel
  • Overnight stay in the Hörnlihütte Matterhorn possible (reservation necessary)
  • Best observation time of the climbers at the Hörnligrat: August–September
  • Photo subject: Matterhorn up close
