Those who take glacier trekking with crampons experience a unique world: a cool wind always blows, and it cracks, creaks, and roars inside the glacier. Rivers continuously gorge the glacier.
The trekking tour leads from Rotenboden along the long lateral moraine on a well-maintained hiking trail. At the following signpost, the path leads straight onto the Gorner Glacier. On the glacier, there is a gentle ascent and crampons are necessary. The path is marked and signposted in blue and white. After the glacier, the panoramic trail continues over three moraines to the Monte Rosa Hut.
The Gorner Glacier is the second largest glacier in the Alpine region, after the Aletsch Glacier. This flowing ice sea has been melting rapidly for years. The melting process causes major changes on and in the glacier. Just a few years ago, it was possible to walk comfortably and with little risk to the Monte Rosa Hut over the glacier. Today, conditions are more unstable. Therefore, it is recommended to go with a mountain guide for the tour.
