Chalet Hotel Schönegg with new spa area and outdoor infinity pool

The 4-star superior Hotel Schönegg in Zermatt now offers a 400 square metre spa area, positioning itself as a year-round destination. The highlight of the new relaxation oasis is the outdoor infinity pool with unobstructed views of the Matterhorn.

The traditional Chalet Hotel Schönegg in Zermatt has opened an exclusive spa area, taking the guest experience to a whole new level. With this offering, the family-run 4-star superior hotel has created a unique retreat that offers relaxation and enjoyment all year round – and all with a breathtaking view of the Matterhorn.

Corthay and Maissen – two big names in architecture and design

The new spa facility was designed by renowned architect Christoph Corthay from Verbier. The 400-square-metre spa extends over two floors. From the Finnish sauna and bio sauna to the heated outdoor infinity pool, guests can enjoy a wellness experience that is second to none. The highlight is the unobstructed view of the Matterhorn – both from the saunas and from the outdoor pool, which is equipped with massage jets and ergonomic bubble loungers. ‘It's like flying over Zermatt,’ is how hotel owner Sebastian Metry describes the unique location of the pool.

The hillside construction work and the planning of the spa area were challenging and took around eight years. ‘We sacrificed three rooms to make the wellness area more spacious and have now expanded it to three times its original size,’ explains Metry, who runs the hotel together with his partner Line Février in the third generation.

In addition to the architecture, the interior design also plays a central role: Zurich-based star interior designer Virginia Maissen has given the spa a harmonious and inspiring atmosphere with Moroccan textured plaster in warm terracotta tones and furniture in the Japanese Wabi-Sabi style. The high-quality, handmade fittings and an innovative cold area with snail showers, ice fountains and a pebble path invite guests to enjoy some intense refreshment.

Exclusive spa partners for a holistic wellness experience

The German natural cosmetics brand Pharmos Natur has been chosen as a partner for beauty treatments. The range includes the Signature Schönegg Facial, a wellness and relaxation facial treatment based on carefully selected products from the Pharmos Natur line. There is also a treatment specially designed for men.

To make the spa visit a real experience for guests, the spa crew prepares daily infusions in the saunas.

Infinity – the Chalet Hotel Schönegg to open all year

With the opening of the spa, the Chalet Hotel Schönegg is pursuing a new strategy as a year-round operation. “Thanks to our expanded wellness offering, we can now offer our guests a special experience in the off-season as well,” explains Metry. The investment of several million Swiss francs is a forward-looking step for the Hotel Schönegg, which will further enhance Zermatt's appeal outside the ski season.

The new spa complements the hotel’s other attractions: from the award-winning infinity terrace to the ‘Saveurs’ restaurant with its 14 Gault Millau points, guests at the Hotel Schönegg can enjoy a wide range of relaxation and culinary delights – just a five-minute walk from the railway station and directly connected to the hotel lift. The new wellness oasis, first-class service and special hospitality make this member of the Relais & Châteaux hotel association the ideal place for relaxation seekers and nature lovers in Zermatt.
